Privacy Policy

Effective and last updated: October 1, 2026

This policy describes how Speech Count ("the app") handles information. It applies to the app on the web and on iOS/Android.

Information you enter

Everything you type or tap - student names, target names, tallies, totals, and the saved session history for each student - is stored in your browser's or device's local storage, on your own device. The free board never sends any of it anywhere, and using it requires no name, email, or account. If you use the Export feature, the file it produces is created on your device and goes only where you choose to save or share it.

Speech Count Pro: purchases, sign-in, and sync

Speech Count Pro is an optional purchase. Buying or restoring Pro requires signing in with a verified email address and involves these services:

  • Purchases are processed by Apple (App Store), Google (Google Play), or on the web by Stripe through RevenueCat. We never see your card details. RevenueCat keeps a record of your purchase against a random identifier (your Support ID), and your email address if you sign in, so your purchase can be restored on your other devices. See RevenueCat's privacy policy.
  • Signing in is required for Pro purchases and sync, and uses only your email address: we email you a one-time code (sent through Resend, an email delivery service) and never store a password. Your email is stored with your purchase record and inside the sign-in token on your device.
  • Sync runs only while you're signed in. Your students and their sessions - the same information described above - are stored in your cloud account, encrypted at rest, so they can appear on your other devices. Netlify hosts the app and its API, and our cloud storage providers are Netlify and Supabase. We don't read, share, or sell this data, and we don't use it for anything but showing it back to you.

You can log out at any time, which stops sync and removes the roster from that device; it stays in your account and comes back when you log in. Deleting your account from the Account page removes the copy in your account immediately and signs out every device; any device that was offline at the time discards its copy the next time it tries to sync. You can also email us from the address you signed in with and we'll do the same.

When you delete a student or a session, the app keeps only that record's ID and the deletion time - the name, target, and counts are erased right away - so that the deletion reaches your other devices. Cloud deletion markers may be retained to prevent a device that has been offline from restoring a deleted record.

On a phone or tablet, the operating system's device backup (iCloud or Google backup) may include the app's data along with everything else on the device; that backup is governed by Apple's or Google's policies and your device settings.

Usage analytics

We use PostHog to measure feature use and purchase funnels on the web and in updated iOS/Android apps. We send predefined event names such as opening the app, using a tally button, viewing a Pro offer, selecting a plan, and starting or completing checkout. These events include the platform, page, plan, and experiment assignment when applicable. Student names, targets, tallies, results, notes, email addresses, sign-in codes, and tokens are never included. Session recording and automatic form and click capture are disabled.

PostHog uses a random device identifier. While you are signed in, your pseudonymous Support ID connects your usage across devices and can connect it to RevenueCat purchase records. Google Analytics continues to measure web usage separately, without your Support ID or purchase revenue; it is not loaded in native apps. Advertising features are disabled. We do not sell analytics data or use it for advertising.

You can stop usage analytics immediately on this device using the “Share usage analytics” switch on the Account page. Billing records needed for purchases, restoration, refunds, and subscriptions continue to be kept by the purchase providers independently of this switch. See PostHog’s privacy policy and Google’s privacy policy.

Purchase analytics

RevenueCat sends confirmed purchases, renewals, cancellations, refunds, product identifiers, transaction identifiers, timestamps, store, currency, revenue, and pseudonymous customer IDs to our PostHog project hosted in the United States. This lets us measure paid conversions and revenue across the website and iOS. We may import verified historical production purchases into those reports. Test, sandbox, and developer purchases are excluded from our business metrics.

Subscriber attributes are not enabled as PostHog person-profile properties. RevenueCat event payloads may include subscriber attributes associated with a purchase. No student names, student records, session notes, or exported files are included in purchase analytics. The device's usage-analytics setting stops app usage events; confirmed billing events are sent separately by RevenueCat. Contact us below for requests concerning those records.

Our hosting service checks the connection IP address to suppress developer traffic before loading usage analytics. PostHog app usage events are configured without IP enrichment.

Data retention and your control

Your data stays on your device until you remove it yourself - by deleting students and sessions in the app, logging out, clearing your browser's site data, or uninstalling the app. If you've used sync, the copy in your account stays until you delete your account or ask us to. Account deletion removes your email, its account lookup, pending sign-in code, and synced roster. Only the old random account ID and revocation time remain to reject old sign-in tokens. Deletion does not cancel recurring subscriptions; use Manage subscription to stop future charges. Purchase records are kept by Apple, Google, RevenueCat, and Stripe under their own policies for as long as required for billing, refunds, and tax.

Children's privacy

Speech Count is intended for use by speech-language professionals, caregivers, and educators tracking someone else's practice sessions. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children themselves. The students whose names and results an adult user enters may be children; that information is entered and controlled by the adult user, stored as described above, and used only to show it back to that user. The analytics described above measure app usage in aggregate and never include student information.

If you use Speech Count for students or clients covered by school or health privacy rules (such as FERPA or HIPAA), it's your responsibility to confirm the app fits your organisation's requirements before entering identifiable records; using initials or nicknames is one way to keep records de-identified. We don't currently sign business associate or school data agreements.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app changes. When we do, this page will describe what information is collected and how it's used, and the "last updated" date above will change accordingly.
